Each January, communities across Oregon pause to honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.. His birthday and the national day of service that follows are more than a moment of remembrance—they are a call to action grounded in dignity, inclusion, and hope for a more just world.

At Northwest Mental Health Management Services, these values are central to the work we do every day in partnership with individuals, families, caregivers, and Direct Support Professionals across our communities.

A Legacy Rooted in Inclusion and Belonging

Dr. King envisioned a society where every person is valued, heard, and supported—regardless of race, ability, or circumstance. His message aligns deeply with the I/DD community, where inclusion is not just an ideal, but a daily practice.

True inclusion means:

  • Creating spaces where individuals of all abilities feel safe and respected

  • Supporting autonomy, choice, and self-advocacy

  • Building communities rooted in compassion, patience, and understanding

These principles guide our services and inspire us to continue advocating for equity and access for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Ways to Honor MLK Day in Portland

The Portland metro area offers several meaningful opportunities to reflect, learn, and give back:

  • The Urban League of Portland Brunch The Urban League of Portland invites you to our annual MLK Day Brunch on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Oregon Convention Center.

Honoring Dr. King in Oregon City

Oregon City also offers thoughtful, community-centered ways to observe MLK Day:

  • I Am MLK Jr. Documentary Join us for a special Fireside Film screening of I Am MLK Jr. on January 20 from 12:00–1:30 PM at the Pioneer Community Center.

These events provide inclusive spaces for families, caregivers, and individuals with I/DD to participate in ways that feel meaningful and accessible.

Moving Forward With Hope

Dr. King reminded us that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Progress happens through small, consistent acts of care—supporting one another, listening deeply, and choosing inclusion even when it requires extra effort.

This January, we invite our community to honor Dr. King not only through words, but through action:

  • By advocating for inclusion

  • By celebrating diversity in all its forms

  • By continuing to build systems of care rooted in dignity and respect

Together, we carry forward a legacy of hope—one that affirms that everyone belongs.
