April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time to move beyond awareness and focus on meaningful inclusion, understanding, and support for individuals with autism and the broader Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) community.
At Northwest Mental Health Management Services (NWMH), we believe acceptance means action—creating opportunities, building relationships, and empowering individuals to live full, independent lives.
Awareness vs. Acceptance (important shift)
While awareness brings visibility, acceptance drives change.
Acceptance means:
Valuing neurodiversity
Creating inclusive environments
Supporting autonomy and choice
Listening to lived experiences
For DSPs and caregivers, this translates into daily, person-centered care that respects dignity and individuality.
The Role of DSPs (SEO target)
Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are the backbone of the I/DD community.
They:
Support daily living and independence
Foster community inclusion
Build meaningful, trusting relationships
Advocate for dignity, rights, and choice
At NWMH, DSPs are more than caregivers—they are advocates, mentors, and community builders.
