January is National Bath Safety Month, and as dedicated Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in Clackamas County, Oregon, Northwest Mental Health Management Services believes it's the perfect time to focus on the critical role bath safety plays in protecting the individuals we care for. According to the CDC, approximately 250,000 people suffer injuries from falls in the bathroom each year, many of which occur while entering or exiting the bathtub. These statistics highlight the importance of proactive safety measures to prevent accidents and ensure a safe environment for those we serve. Bath Safety Tips for DSP Caregivers
Assess the Bathroom Environment
Ensure non-slip mats are placed inside and outside the bathtub or shower.
Install grab bars near the tub, shower, and toilet to provide stability.
Check for clutter or water spills that could increase the risk of slipping.
Support During Transfers
Use transfer benches or shower chairs to assist individuals with limited mobility.
Train in proper lifting techniques to safely help individuals in and out of the tub.
Temperature Safety
Test water temperature before bathing to avoid burns.
Consider installing anti-scald devices on faucets and showerheads.
Provide Supervision
Stay within arm’s reach while assisting with bathing to respond quickly if needed.
Be attentive to signs of dizziness or unsteadiness, which may require immediate action.
Regular Maintenance
Check that all safety equipment, such as grab bars and shower chairs, is securely installed and in good condition.
Replace any worn or ineffective non-slip mats.
