How You Can Support Brain Health in Portland This June

June is Brain Health Awareness Month: Let’s Talk Mental Fitness, Connection, and Outdoor Living

At Northwest Mental Health Management Services, we’re proud to recognize June as Brain Health Awareness Month—a time to spotlight the importance of nurturing your brain just like any other part of your body. From managing stress to getting good sleep, from nutrition to social connection, brain health is the foundation of emotional and cognitive wellbeing.

This month is all about education, prevention, and empowerment—helping our Clackamas County community understand that mental wellness isn’t just the absence of illness, but the presence of strength, resilience, and clarity.

How You Can Support Brain Health in Portland This June

1. Move Your Body, Strengthen Your Brain Exercise isn't just about muscles—it's also one of the most powerful tools for brain health. Portland offers so many ways to stay active and engaged:

  • Join a community walk or hike: Try Abernethy Creek Park, Powell Butte, Clackamette Cove Trail & River Access Trail, or the Eastbank Esplanade.

  • Try a new fitness class: Look for brain-body workouts like yoga, tai chi, or dance at local studios.

2. Engage in Mental Fitness Keeping your mind active helps preserve memory and boost cognitive function.

3. Nourish with Brain-Boosting Foods Healthy fats, leafy greens, berries, and omega-3s all support brain function.

4. Connect with Others Isolation is a major factor in declining brain health. Portland has many ways to stay connected:

June 21: First Day of Summer = First Day of Brain Boosting Outdoors!

The summer solstice on June 21 marks the official start of summer and the longest day of the year—an ideal time to get outside, soak up vitamin D, and reconnect with nature.

Research shows that time outdoors reduces anxiety, boosts mood, and improves cognitive performance. Even just 20 minutes outside can increase focus and decrease stress hormones.

This month, try:

  • Reading a book under a tree at Laurelhurst Park

  • Taking a lunch break, walk along the McLoughlin Promenade

  • Watching the sunset from Council Crest Park

Outdoors = Brain Health. It’s a simple equation that makes a big difference.

Let’s make this summer one of clarity, connection, and calm.
